Soulslike Games But You Are A Boss Instead Of A Hero

Soulslike GamesThe Dark Queen Of Mortholme is a Soulslike game where players are given control of the Final Boss of the game. Unlike the traditional Soulslike games where players customize a Character/Hero and improve their stats by leveling up and equipped with better equipment. You are the Dark Queen of Mortholme who is the final boss of the game i.e. defending her throne from the immortal Hero.

The game is a single-player and strictly boss fight only. The pixel art and the atmospheric color fit well to the Dark Fantasy theme. The game was released and developed by Mosu. To play and download the game, click on the hyperlink.

Soulslike Games But Hero Is An AI

The Hero is an AI who acts like a standard player. After each death, you can see the AI improve and start to dodge your attack. Implementing better strategies as the Hero starts reading her attack pattern. This can be seen as the Hero starts adjusting and attacking from a safe distance.

Similar to the players in real life, the AI or Hero makes mistakes and dies to silly moves even though he was performing well before. To make it more interesting, each encounter has an interaction between the Hero and the Queen. Relentlessly, the Hero resurrects and keeps on returning to life in the hope of defeating the Dark Queen of Mortholme.

Story Plot

As we track the Hero’s growth, you can notice that the Queen or boss starts to grow emotionally. The emotionless and ruthless Dark Queen of Mortholme who was feared among her peers, seems to enjoy the little conversation and Hero’s presence every once in a while.

It can be seen during the death animation where the queen burns the corpse of the Hero every time. After a while, the death animation starts to change as the Queen shows respect and affection towards the Hero. Sadly, the Hero isn’t aware of such change as he has to restart his run and get strong to fight against the unbeatable Dark Queen.

The stats of the Queen are maxed out with an unfair amount of HP. The boss even has 2 forms with each having a different set of moves or skills. She resets her HP, and the second form is activated when she has the last HP bar. Imagine controlling such an overpowered character to stomp an inspiring Hero. We can all relate to the feeling of despair.

Every time the Hero visits, he improves and learns from his past deaths or defeats. Equipped with better weapons and skills, the Hero adapts and tries to learn how to cheese the boss according to the data he has from the previous runs.

Plot Twist

The Queen who is a player knows that she can’t be beaten as there is no such game where the AI or bots are supposed to be OP and unbeatable.

The unbeatables are supposed to be the players who have overcome many challenges due to their limitations. However, in this game, your limiter is released, and you have access to powerful skill sets that can be cheesed and spammed to not even give room to the AI Hero.

Imagine if you do not show all your moves, then the AI or Hero can’t even adapt to that attack. This means he cannot improve, but you can adapt to the Hero’s movement.

Additionally, the game has multiple endings that can be achieved after satisfying certain conditions. So, the game encourages players to play even if they have seen an Ending or completed the game once. The game playthrough is roughly 20 minutes.

Review

It has a unique experience yet it has a similar feel like soulslike games. The approach of the game from boss’s side shows how lonely it feels to be powerful as no one even dares to approach and entertain her existence.

The Boss side of the story and character development creates an awkward affection towards her. We are well versed in Hero’s side of the story where he always lacks power and tries to gain as much as possible to prepare for the upcoming fight. Ultimately to lose again and start again.

Well, the Boss has only 1 life and your task is to defend against the countless attempts of the Hero by adapting his growth. From time to time, the hitbox seems weird and it feels like it doesn’t register but still, the combat feels awesome.
