Black Myth Wukong – All Game Endings & Lore Explained
Currently, at the time of writing this Black Myth Wukong guide, we have only discovered two endings that are True Ending and the Bad Ending. There are more endings and if we manage to unlock it then we will update this guide. For the time being, let’s learn what has been conspired from the limited information we have and how each ending is different from each.
All Endings & Lore Explained In Black Myth Wukong
Bad Ending
In the Bad Ending, the Destined One defeats the soulless final boss who is none other than The Great Sage’s Broken Shell. The headband which was severed from the Sun Wukong is shown to appear after defeating the boss. The Old Monkey picks up the enchanted headband and crowns it to the Destined One.
The Enchanted headband was a shackle placed on the Sun Wukong to control his actions as he was unpredictable. The Celestial Court was wary of Sun Wukong’s strength and merit, so they crowned the Enchanted headband to the original which the Destined One chose to wear and obey the laws and order of the court like a puppet. Hence, the Bad Ending.
True Ending
In the True Ending, we are shown that Sun Wukong gets his memories from Erlang which he chose to seal on his third eye. They both conspired against the Celestial court and the fight at the prologue was just a pretense. To break the shackle and gain freedom, Sun Wukong needed to remove the Enchanted Headband which he could have only achieved from his Death.
After his death, all 6 senses were removed from his main body. As shown 5 senses were gathered by the Yaoguai Kings except the last sense which was Mind. Erlang who held the last sense was waiting for the Destined One to reach and defeat him to find out whether he was the true reincarnation of the Sun Wukong or not. Therefore, he returns the Sun Wukong’s memory after the defeat, and if you listen carefully then Tathagatha’s name is mentioned.
At the final cutscene on the mountain, Erlang says that your journey has just begun. Finally returning to the final boss fight against The Great Sage’s Broken Shell. Defeat him and during the cutscene, the Destined One who has the memory of the past will not accept the Enchanted headband and return as the true reincarnation of Sun Wukong.
Why Would Erlang Help Sun Wukong?
During the cutscenes, we are given a glimpse of Erlang’s sister. Erlang’s sister fell in love and married a mortal which was a taboo and violation of Heavenly Rules. So, for that, she was punished or imprisoned as we cannot see her in the game.
In Chinese mythology, Erlang Shen depicted as Yang Jian had to rescue her mother who was imprisoned under Mount Tao. The reason she was sentenced to imprisonment was that she married a human which would be similar to her sister’s case as she was nowhere to be seen ingame except in cutscene.
Erlang was a Just and compassionate God who saved her mother by cleaving Mount Tao using the axe. We know that Erlang and Sun Wukong have a long history of battle. Seeing how hard he is trying to break the shackles and gain freedom. He relates and connects with Sun Wukong, so he takes part in Sun Wukong’s play.
It was made clear in the True Ending that he was just a substitute or a means to test the Destined One. Whether he was worthy to gain his mind and start what he was meant to do i.e. wage war against the Celestial Court.
As Erlang said the true journey begins now. So, it might be related to the New Game+ where you can unlock more Endings after completing it. Just a speculation!
